Two Christmas Gifts you Could Consider Buying your Loved One.

Considering something different than the usual smellies or chocolates then look no further because here are 2 things you could buy your loved one to help them to stay safe and independent in 2025:

1. City Wide Care Alarm.

Whilst not the most exciting gift, it can provide both you and your loved one with peace of mind and can support them to safely remain in their own homes for as long as possible.

It is an alarm that can be worn either round their neck or wrist and can be pressed in the case of an emergency.

A good example is if someone has a fall and cannot get up on their own. Once pressed, you can speak with someone, tell them what the problem is and they will then be able to send for help.

There is a small monthly fee but I tend to compare it to insurance... hopefully you will never need to use it but if you do need to, then it is a godsend.

They also provide other alarms that may be benficial including:

  • bed and chair alarms

  • falls alarms

  • property exit sensors

  • medication dispensors

  • smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

  • heat detectors

  • flood detectors

2. Amazon Alexa or Echo or similar Smart devices.

This technology allows people to do an array of things by simply speaking instructions. It is perfect for people with reduced mobility or who have difficulty using a phone/tablet (potentially due to dexterity issues or upper limb weakness).

They may need a little bit of support setting it up but once it is set up then it can be used to:

  • make a completely hands free phone call.

  • can set up a “drop in” which means family can check in on them without relying on them to answer the phone.

  • play a huge variety of music or play a radio station.

  • set regular, daily alarms to promote with taking medication.

  • set alarms to remind of any appointments.

  • with the correct smart plugs and lightbulbs, your lights and pligs can be turned on and off through voice control.

  • can create a hands free shopping list which can be utilised by your loved one or can be used by carers.

Whilst these Smart devices can be helpful, do bare in mind that new technology may be daunting to some people and some people may struggle to learn how to use it effectively. People may need support initially until they get the hang of it, so leaving written instructions may be helpful.

I once had a client who used an Alexa however struggledbecause she insisted on being polite to it and saying “please” and “thank you” which unfortunately would confuse the device. Convincing her to “be rude” say exactly what she wanted and nothing more was tricky but got there in the end :)
