What is an Occupation?

An “occupation” is any activity that you need, want or like to do. Consider an “occupation” as anything you do that “occupies” your time.

Occupational Therapy recognises that engaging in our “occupations” (activities) is essential to our health and wellbeing and that when we unable to do so, it will have a negative impact on our quality of life.

What is an Occupational Therapy Assessment?

An Occupational Therapy assessment is a thorough, holistic assessment that establish what an individual may benefit from to enable them to live a more independent and fullfilling life. They identify an individual’s current abilities and establish ways that they can do everyday tasks more independently or safely.

Assessments are tailored to ensure they cover your individual needs however they can include:

Environmental Assessments which assess an individual’s home enviroment and how they manage within it. Advice on how to make the environment safer or the individual more independent, can then be given.

Functional Assessments which assess an individuals ability to complete specific tasks. The Occupational Therapist can establish what the individual can do independently and what they need support with. They can advise on strategies to make the individual more independent and safe when doing the task and can be used to educate family/cares how best to support that individual.
